I’m a winner of the Pilkington Teaching Prize for outstanding teaching at the University of Cambridge, and I often give talks for schoolchildren, teachers and the general public about mathematics. I used to be the Editor and then Executive Editor of "Plus", an online magazine for the general public about the applications of mathematics (named "best science site on the web" in 2001), which is part of the Millennium Mathematics Project.
My mathematical interests concern differential equations and special functions, with applications to fluid dynamics; and the commercial/financial applications of mathematics; I once acted as specialist adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee on credit cards.
I was the Senior Tutor of Christ’s College from 2008 to 2023, with overall responsibility for the academic provision and performance of the College. Having stepped down from that post I continue to be a Tutor and the Senior Fellow in Mathematics at the College.
