Our congratulations to Christ’s postgraduate Sam Carling (m. 2020), who has been elected as the Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, becoming the youngest sitting MP in the Commons.

An MPhil student in Pathology, Sam becomes the first Labour MP to hold the constituency since its creation in 1997. During his time at Christ’s he has served as the JCR President and co-chair of the Cambridge University Labour Club, as well as having been elected to Cambridge City Council (West Chesterton ward) while an undergraduate Natural Sciences student.

Christ’s alumnus Tom Hayes (m. 2005) has also been elected as a Labour MP, in the constituency of Bournemouth East. Tom was a postgraduate student at Christ’s in International Relations and served as the College’s MCR President.

Another alumnus, John Healey (m. 1979), was re-elected as MP for Rawmarsh and Conisbrough in South Yorkshire, and has been appointed as Secretary of State for Defence in the newly-formed government.
