Congratulations to our Honorary Fellow Professor Philip Kitcher (m.1966) who has been awarded the University of Pittsburgh 2019 Nicholas Rescher Medal for contributions to Systematic Philosophy. He was presented with the award at a ceremony in Pittsburgh on Friday 7 February.
The Nicholas Rescher Medal, awarded biennially, was established in 2010 in honour of a distinguished philosophy professor who taught at the University of Pittsburgh for more than 50 years.
Philip Kitcher is the John Dewey Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University. He has published extensively on the philophy of science, the philophy of biology, the social reception of science and the place of science within democratic society. His work also includes books on naturalistic ethics and philosophical themes in literature and music.
