The World of Words Residential is due to take place in Cambridge from 7-8 April 2025. The event programme will be circulated closer to the time of the event, to students who have been selected, including a survey to select the academic sessions you'd prefer to attend.
Depending on the accommodation room you are allocated, you will stay at either Christ's or at King's. You can still plan your travel to get to central Cambridge, we're only a few minutes walk from one another so do not delay making your travel arrangements until you're allocated a college - just crack on!
When do I need to be there for?
The first session will begin at 13:00. You will be able to sign in and drop bags off from 11:30am, and lunch will be provided from 12:00, for those who would be here for it. With this in mind, you should aim to arrive in central Cambridge (i.e. factor in time from the car park/train station to the centre!) by 12:30, but earlier is also fine. Don't panic about delays on the day - it happens, and only worth stressing if you need to at the time!
Overnight accommodation on Sunday 6 April
We will be contacting students based on distance/travel time priority from next week; there are limited rooms available for the Sunday night.
Finishing Time
We expect to be fully wrapped up by 14:00, but likely earlier. We do not recommend booking return travel before 14:00, so you have sufficient time to say bye to people, have lunch and get where you need to go. You should also think about whether you would like time to wander around Cambridge - our schedule is very packed so unfortunately (and unusally!) we won't be able to offer free time to go out into the city in the 24-hour period of the programme. Therefore, please factor this in for the morning of the 7th, or afternoon of the 8th!
It is your responsibility to get yourself to and from Cambridge. We have advice on getting here via various forms of transport on our How to Get to Christ's page. Please read it!!
Tips for trains: the 16-17 railcard costs £30 and gets you 50% of train travel for a year (16-25 railcard gets a third off)! You can also get a Group Save if travelling as a group of 3 or more, provided you all travel together on the same trains (in the couple of instances where there might be more than one person from the same school). You can save a third on ticket prices this way.
If you're struggling with working out the best option for your travel, please do get in touch with us; we are experienced with students coming to our events from all over the UK, as well as travelling places ourselves! You can write to either Ellie at Christ's access@christs.cam.ac.uk or Ellie at King's slo@kings.cam.ac.uk. Please remember to tell us in the email what event it's for because we're running a lot in the same period!
Students currently eligible for government-funded free school meals, students with experience in care, and refugee students are eligible for financial support with travel. We will be in touch separately with those students.
As the schedule for this event is quite busy, we're prioritising the opportunity to attend academic taster sessions whilst you're with us, over more general information type sessions. We know that for some people, they will already have had these and may find them repetitive, but if you haven't (most wont'!) don't fear - there are lots of these available online for you to attend as suits you.
We recommend that you consider signing up for and attending the following webinar opportunities (where multiple dates are listed, it is the same session!):
Cambridge for Beginners (5 March at 12pm, future dates to be added)
Understanding Student Finance (4 March, 5 May, future dates to be added)
Personal Statements & Competitive Applications (15 April, 5 May, future dates to be added, booking to open next week!)
The three above are part of the Christ's Regular Webinar Series.
Introduction to Cambridge and Personal Statements sessions from King's (May onwards)
These webinars will cover a lot of the basics and provide an opportunity to ask questions. We'll also be recommending some web pages for you to read through before the residential, to cover some of the most common queries we get an ultimately open up time for even more questions!
