A new zine is published by Christ’s students and alumni. A zine is a non-commercial, self-published booklet that expresses an individual or creative group’s art, writing, or thoughts.

Typewriter Zine, named after Christ’s ‘Typewriter’ building designed by Denis Lasdun in the 1960s, is edited by alumni Emily Freeman, Annaliese Mansfield and Samuel Smith together with second-year Lily Owens.

In contrast to other digitally-produced Cambridge zines, this one is created with an emphasis on the process of making. Emily and Sam have typewritten all the contents with hand-drawn illustrations by Lily and Annaliese.

The theme of this first edition is ‘Characters’ and includes poetry, prose and artwork which the editors – ‘the Typewriters’ – say have ‘a keen sense of the blurry edges of this uncertain world’.

Emily said:

“In a world and University where students are usually sat at a laptop, we want to give students the space to give thought to the physical ways of bringing about art or poems or publications.”

“Cranking out the letters of a Typewriter is a slow task. But what it offers is a unique mode of reading and writing poetry – one that appreciates both the pace and materiality of the written word. We’re pleased to say that we will soon be inviting contributions on our next theme from all members of the University of Cambridge.”
