Organist and Bye-Fellow, Professor David Rowland, has made the first solo recording of Christ’s Chapel organ to celebrate 40 years as Director of Music.
The current organ was re-configured in the 1980s but retains much of the pipework of an instrument installed in 1705. The newly released CD features a programme of music by J S Bach composed at the beginning of the 18th century.
The recording was made in January when Professor Rowland elected to wear his slippers for the occasion. He has a small organ console installed in his own home so often practises before breakfast. He said:
“Because it’s early in the morning, I’m often still in my slippers and I’ve found they are remarkably comfortable to play in!”
Professor Rowland gave the opening recital of this organ on 6 October 1983 shortly before he joined the College as Director of Music 40 years ago.
A former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Professor Emeritus of Music at the Open University, he also directs the College choir.
On Thursday 17 October at 5.50pm, Professor Rowland will give an organ recital of Bach which will be followed by evensong and drinks in the Ante Chapel with an opportunity to purchase the CD.
