The May Ball is organised by a committee of current students every other year. It actually takes place in June (at the end of the academic year), and is an all-night party with food, music and entertainment in the College buildings and grounds.
There is normally a theme for each ball, and the College Art Society and May Ball Committee create and organise decorations to fit this.
Musical acts are invited to perform live on stage, though the line-up is normally a secret until the ball starts! Past Christ's balls have included Tion Wayne, Scouting for Girls, Toploader, The Hoosiers, To Kill a King, Gentleman’s Dub Club, The Correspondents, Soft Crunchy Landings, and The Carnabys as well as samba bands, DJ sets and Cambridge-based artists (including some from Christ's!).
Recent May Balls
The theme of the 2024 May Ball was 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream', and the various areas of Christ's were transformed, with the Fellows' Garden being the Enchanted Wood (with the main stage and also a Silent Disco/DJ area), Fourth Court being Titania's Bower (including second stage, face painting and glitter, food vans, speed painting, cinema, karaoke), Third Court was Oberon's Court (Food and drink stalls, chocolate fountain, ball pit), Second Court was the Fairy Ring (food and drink stalls) and First Court was named Love-in-Idelness (live music in the Buttery, acoustic music in the Chapel, casino). Even the Car Park became Puck's Hideaway (fairground stalls, bumper cars) and the Fellows' Building was transformed with a beautiful lighting projection!
The headliner was London DJ and rapper Tion Wayne, who performed on the big stage in the Fellows' Garden/Enchanted Wood, in addition to a ceilidah and Abba and Arctic Monkeys tributes.
The Committee partnered with three charities for this event: Home-Start Cambridgeshire, Crisis UK, and SolidariTee. See the May Ball website for more information.

In her profile, Emma says (about the 2022 May ball): 'The theme was Mythos (perfect for a classicist!) and the atmosphere was electric! We had live acts in the Fellows’ Garden, food places everywhere and even a ball pit! It was such a good time and a great way to cool down after the year ended.'
Nina says (about the 2022 May ball): '...ending with the Ball was absolutely marvellous: the food was delicious, the thematic decorations amazing, and I literally danced all night. Celebrating being done with my friends could hardly have been done in better style - I’m looking forward to next year’s ball already.'
