Student sat in the window with a bookThis page is part of the Christ's applicants from Scotland section.

As mentioned in the subject requirements section of our Economics page, it is important to have a strong background in Maths if you are considering an application for the Cambridge Economics course.

We define our offers individually, but for students in the scottish system, the typical offer for Economics is A1, A1, A2 in three Advanced Highers, including A1 in Mathematics:

  • Advanced Higher Mathematics is a required subject for Economics at Cambridge.
  • At Christ's we also require an additional maths-based course at Advanced Higher. If you have the choice, the most suitable one for Economics is Advanced Higher Statistics. We realise that not all Scottish schools offer AH Statistics, however. If Statistics is not available at your school, alternatives could be Advanced Higher Mathematics of Mechanics or Advanced Higher Physics.
  • We do not require candidates to have studied Economics at school. So although many applicants for Economics also take Advanced Higher Economics, this is not a requirement as long as you have a strong interest in Economics and are reading about it. An essay subject would be helpful, but this could be Advanced Higher History or similar.

All applicants for Economics must also take the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA), which requires registration by mid-September. You will be able to search for a test centre in Scotland.

Please read our Economics subject page thoroughly, including profiles by some of our students, information about what the application process involves and resources for developing your interest and relevant skills. Applicants should have a vivid interest in Economics as a discipline and the questions it poses about individuals, organizations and societies.

If you are interested in Economics but are concerned that your maths interest / ability may not be enough for the Cambridge Economics course, please read the page on exploring Economics courses.

Ducks on the swimming poolAs well as the Economics subject meetings on Zoom in the Christ's Online Open Days (October of S5, February of S5, or September of S6), events with Economics content include the University open day online or in person in July of S5, and look out for any Economics Masterclasses

Please don't worry if your school is not able to provide support for your application to Cambridge as we provide support directly via our ongoing support emails and events in the lead up to application, our UK application support pages and our current applicants section.
