This page is part of the Christ's applicants from Scotland section.
We welcome applications from students in the Scottish SQA qualification system who would like to apply for Mathematics at Christ's, and we recommend that you start by reading James's profile as he came to Christ's to study Mathematics from Glasgow.
We define our offers individually, but for students in the scottish system, the typical offer for Mathematics is A1, A1, A2 in three Advanced Highers and at least 1,1 in STEP Mathematics.
- Advanced Higher Mathematics is a required subject for Mathematics at Cambridge.
- At Christ's we also require a second Advanced Higher Mathematics subject - ideally Mathematics of Mechanics, but if you cannot take this then Advanced Higher Statistics would be acceptable.
- There is no requirement for your third Advanced Higher subject, but Physics is the most common choice for Maths applicants, followed by Chemistry. If you are applying for the Maths with Physics option in first year, please note that you are required to take either AH Mathematics of Mechanics or AH Physics.
You'll see that you also need to take STEP papers II and III. These are additional Maths exams that you would normally take in June of S6, at the same time as your Advanced Highers, and you should be able to take them at your school (speak with the exams officer). We recommend having a look at the STEP Support Programme, which provides online support in the form of weekly assignments that will prepare you for sitting STEP exams (when reading the website Year 13 = S6 and Year 12 = S5). For students from state schools who recieve an offer for Maths at Christ's, we normally also provide some online STEP tuition if your school is unable to help you to prepare for STEP.
Note that as well as the Maths subject meetings on Zoom in the Christ's Online Open Days (October of S5, February of S5, or September of S6), we also run an online Maths Open Day in April/May of S5. Additional events with maths content include the University open day online or in person in July of S5, and if you're a woman attending a UK school that does not charge fees we encourage you to look into our annual Women in Maths Programme.
Please read our maths subject page thoroughly, including profiles by some of our maths students, information about what the application process involves and resources for developing your interest and relevant maths skills.
Please don't worry if your school is not able to provide support for your application to Cambridge as we provide support directly via our ongoing support emails and events in the lead up to application, our UK application support pages and our current applicants section.
