This page is part of the Christ's applicants from Scotland section.
We welcome applications from students in the Scottish SQA qualification system who would like to apply for Modern and Medieval Languages (MML) at Christ's. We define the terms our offers individually, but for students in the scottish system, the typical offer for MML is A1, A2, A2 in three Advanced Highers including either one or two languages out of Advanced Higher French, German, Italian, or Spanish.
Advice for choosing Advanced Higher subjects
For MML, it's a requirement to take either one or two languages at Advanced Higher or equivalent. French, German, Italian, and Spanish are offered as Advanced Highers (if available at your school), but we are happy to consider students with a mixture of qualifications so please feel free to get in touch to discuss this if you think you might like to take Portuguese, Russian, Classical Latin or Classical Greek in a different system.
The most common Advanced Highers that MML applicants also take are English and History, however, we emphasise that you do not need to have studied literature, thought or history in any formal way before applying, and we regularly accept students who have taken one or more languages alongside Mathematics (the third most common subject for MML applicants), Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics as well.
Other Advanced Higher choices that you might consider include Classical Studies, Computing Science, Economics, Geography, Mathematics of Mechanics, Modern Studies, Music, Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies, Sociology or Statistics. If you have any questions about your choices, please send us an email.
I have never encountered any issues with having done Advanced Highers instead of A-Levels: they are different courses, but neither is any better nor worse. The MML course is very literature-heavy, which is something that is not really done in depth during the Advanced Highers, but I found that after my first term I settled into swing of the work. There is definitely an adjustment period, but I was at no disadvantage having come from Scotland instead of a similar school in England.
